Trail ride this Saturday 3/15/08 in ANF.
If you are one of the folks that think "numbered forest roads" offer no challenge you need to make this ride.
Meeting place will be in the vacinity of HWY 267 & Crawfordville HWY, it will be a morning ride.
Exact time and meeting place will follow as soon as it's nailed down.
. . oh, I should probably add that because this will be on numbered forest roads the vehicles must be 'street legal' or risk citation, impoundment, death by 12ga blast, whatever the FS LEOs think most appropriate.:)

I have never road the ANF, but it is kind of hard to believe that numbered, supposedly maintained roads require any kind of 4x4 skill....Like I said, all I have to compare it to is our Eglin AFB reservation land which is like riding NF b/c we have to stay on numbered roads and such and 99% of them are all 2 wheel drive friendly and 4x4 is not ever needed.....I have heard several people say the ANF is a great time though. How far is it from Crestview FL? Would it be worth the drive? I am interested fo shizzle.

I can understand that Rebel. But *we picked* these forest roads.
For example:
http://www.canopy.net/truckpix/wallofmud.jpg
6" of lift on 37" tires. Numbered forest road. Please notice that is not a wall of water it is pushing.
http://www.canopy.net/truckpix/sunk.jpg
Bad Azz (and CUTE!) Sammi. Plenty of lift, big 'ol Swampers. Numbered forest road.
I won't say all the numbered forest roads in ANF are maintained as well as these two. But we are trying to get the FS to do as well on all the roads as they do on these.
Mapquest.com says it is
Total Estimated Time: 2.0 hours 38 minutes
Total Estimated Distance: 167 miles
from Crestview to Crawfordville.

I'd be very surprised if we don't have a variety of vehicles show up. Some better suited than others to the environment.
But yea, most of the spots have bypasses. Just whatever you do when Scott says "go that way it's easier!" and points to the right - turn left and floor it.;)

Sadly I won't be there to watch the show  We had about 50 pine trees pulled out of the yard this week and I see some clean up in my near future. Mike and Wade know how to find plenty of trouble without me though--go for it.
Greg, safe bypasses are always available. JUST DO IT! Make Chris ride with you.

As if anyone needed further incentive after those pix . .
I'll also burn some more "ANF Goodies" CD's to bring along with the humungus maps showing (virtually) ALL the numbered forest roads in ANF, the lists (and lists) of GPS waypoints, and trail notes.
. . along with other cool stuff related to ANF I'm forgetting at the moment. OH! Like aerial photography of the entire forest broken down into (about) 5 mile squares with LAT/LON coordinates around the borders!
Shooot, its worth showing up just for that stuff, 'specially as you can't even get the maps showing all the numbered roads from the government for another several months.:cool:

I see that the ANF is south of Tallahassee. Its like a 3hr drive for me just to get to there, how much further south are you guys meeting? Will it be worth that long of a drive b/c thats bordering me driving far enough I could go to MMORV or GreyRock for the same driving distance almost and then get to wheel the rocks? Just asking.
Cheddar
03-13-2008, 10:40 AM
Grayson, it's only 2 hrs from crestview to tally on I10 driving the speed limit, exit 56 to exit 196, 140 total miles. Then it's about 20 miles or 30 min from exit 196 to the intersection that they are talking about just south of town.
it's still a haul, but not quite 3+ hrs.
Area51
03-13-2008, 11:05 AM
yeah just get off at the midway exit, take 90 east, capital circle south, and 319/61 south to the intersection of 267. easy and should only take 2.5 hours travel time.

It was extra great to see you Greg, Kyle, Case, Adrian, and Parker again!
Pete, I'm proud to report that Greg survived. Didn't need his water wings one time! Well, ok, he could have used them a time or two - but I never saw a PFD around his neck - not even once!
. . it was pretty amusing to see water shooting six feet out of both his exhaust pipes after one particularly deep hole (by the way, that is not an exageration - six feet) but he made it! :D

ok, CAME HOME MONDAY AFTER WORK AND NOTICED THAT MY CJ PUKED. THERE WAS A BROWN MILKSHAKE AROUND MY TIRES IN THE FRONT. LOOKED UP UNDER AND IT WAS THE AXLES PUKEING ON THE GROUND. WHOOPS. THINKS IT TIME TO REGEAR. GOT TO CLEAN THEM THINGS UP, GOT LOTS OF WATER IN THERE, SEALS ARE SHOT.
I am ordering this stuff from MOABMIKE with Discount Gearing out in Utah. All Yukon, 4.11 gears with master install kits, dana 30 carrier, lock right locker, for the rear 4.11 gears, master install kit, spool. cheaper and gauranteed to work. Getting all this sent to the door for $800, also found I need a heavier radiator, so I am getting an alumminum high prerformance radiators designed for CJ's with AMC V8's, has tranny cooler intergrated and a new overflow bottle. Hopefully when this order is done, Im done. Lets make a DATE GARY & PETE.

As it is the ANF, and the line between riding and destruction is so thin, we should all naturally engage four wheel drive and tread lightly as possible. The less wheel spin in these videos the better! "Bogging" is for places like puddin creek. ;)

I deffinately tried the idle approach this time, it made for a much cleaner ride. Simply getting through some of that water made it plenty exciting enough for me! The bronco had more traction than before we installed the mini-spool. I had a blast and look forward to the next one!

The spool does make a noticible difference, doesn't it. The next thing to be that obvious of an improvement while trail riding will be a set of swampers. The difference between them and MT's is as obvious as the difference between a spool and not!
As far as idling through a hole, I judge a wheeler's "skill level" by how he (or she) does things. You need to hit the hole just hard enough to make it, How do you know what is hard enough? Experience, knowledge of vehicle and capability of driver lets you know.

Red Tintop
03-25-2008, 09:59 AM
Oh, they work. So did the MT's I had before.
So did the open axle you had before the spool.
My point is that the extra pull the spool gave you is the same extra pull you feel from a set of swampers.

The best mod ever? That is a tough one.
For me I think it was the re-geared t-case with 2wd-lo. With the spool and traction bar following up very close behind. The traction or anti-hop bar really made a huge difference right from the first time I let the clutch out.

I will have 15K in the mother as of tommorow. It's gonna be passed down from generation to generation. This good deal did not turn out to be a good deal. It is nice now however.

At some point, probably when I do the engine swap, I'll drain my diffs, trans and t-case. My t-case has a clear inspection cover, makes it easy to see the oil level and if there is any water. I'd like to get a clear gearz dif cover too, but it is definately cheaper to just run the vents up high.

I'd really like to see the everyone at PC. Of course, at the last minute, I heard about the spring fling going on at Grey Rock in N. Alabama.. Kinda would like to go shoot some footage of that stuff. Guaranteed to be plenty of carnage :D

You know me; I'm a trail riding kind of guy.
I don't mean it any any way disrespectfuly but I have no interest in attending a mud bogging event. Unless I am getting paid to do it.

I think I may prefer to go trail riding as well. Getting up really early, paying to get in, driving down there. Maybe I'm getting old...Hopefully I'll have shocks this time too!

It sure was entertaining to see you hit all those bumps with no shocks at all, Parker.
I think I'll miss it. ;)

Wait, I thought that was a pretty decent response. What would have made it better would have been if he said
Scott, it's time to practice your FCAT reading skills. Besides, you and I both know she's definitely not jiggily in the least...well, maybe I know that better than you do :D;)
On another note...is the Sunday ride on?!?! We have shocks (thanks to Andrew...you ROCK!!!!) and we are ready to roll!!!!! :)

03-28-2008, 08:30 PM
Hmmm, I thought it was important to jiggle at least a little, especially in some places.
And certainly Park would know so I bow to his expertise in this matter.:D
My wife is talking about making strawberry jam Sunday morning instead of burning, that is a step closer to riding for me. Just gotta find a little while longer to wrench tomorrow afternoon.

would there be a place to park my truck and trailer safely?
87Rumbler
03-29-2008, 09:12 AM
Yes. In fact the normal meeting place is partially chosen because it has ample trailer parking space and plenty of traffic to keep the rif-raf away.
BN & LoneSouth ~always~ trailer their Bronco down and to my knowedge have never had any kind of security issue.

Yea, yea, get yer punches in...we haven't had any problems. there is a dirt strip next to the gas station we always leave the 4runner at.
Did we ever figure out a time? We may have a few people and another heep on 33"s with us.

Parker to my knowedge no time has been set.

10:AM at the corner of 319 & 267.
Andrew, bring the bike. I've got enough power to pull it out of the mud. Though finding a place to hook the stap safely could be an issue. :D

Awww now I'm starting to feel bad.
I'd love to go any time either place. But there is just too much stuff to get done before next weekend and not enough time left to get it done if I go play tomorrow.
Even with my semi-retired status.
Seriously, even Suzanne doesn't want to make the bike ride tomorrow 'cause of the chores we have to get done.

Noonish might work for me. I got gardening to if I can. I picked up one too many logs to throw on the burn pile today...stupid back.
Ya'll just come here, give me incentive to put the swampers on.

OK...we are a go for noon tomorrow. We have Andrew, Scott and Us. I'm trying to get my buddy to come out as well...We can either meet at scotts or at the gas station. Is Bob still coming?
