Jim Hudson
(xxx) xxx-xxxx"
I purchased this jeep from Jim last month, and I should have inspected it in the daylight...
The jeep is now sitting down in the shop with 7 missing frost plugs... It still hasn't started and the carb leaks...
Can I blame Jim completely? No, I didn't inspect the jeep like I should have and I looked at it at night. So I bear just as much responsiblilty.
But I will start to list what my son is doing to this jeep as it has turned into his project to work on...

Where on a jeep block is the casting code? I need to know what this block is to get parts from it...
Thanks...

No pix, but good descriptions.

says that "all AMC V8 motors have their displacement size cast into both sides of the block between the first and second freeze plugs. They are raised numbers about 2" tall"
hope this helps . .

I didn't build that Jeep nor the motor. I sold Chris Hudson the Jeep as a project Jeep. I helped him a little on it. It ran OK when I sold it. Just a used motor out of a Waggy.
All AMC V8's are the same. At the parts house just ask for a 89 Jeep Grand Wagoneer with 5.9L. 99% of the time that will get you what you want. AMC used all the same external parts no matter what the displacement. The 290 through the 401 are all from the same cast block. Just bored different. The 290-343-390 also have a slightly different deck height but even then I have interchanged heads and such.
Also before you buy anything, get with me. I have tons of that junk around here. Most of it I will give you.

Jason, I have bought spark plugs, and freeze plugs so far. Do you have a 2bbl carb? Or a 4bbl with intake?
I know it needs u-joints, 2 of the 4 were missing caps.
It is turning out to be a good project for my son at Haney...
Other than one of the instructors there told him he would have to remove the head to take out a block freeze plug.
The freeze plugs have been replaced, and the flywheel is back on (had to replace 2 behind the flywheel). Corey should be installing the transmission today, but I need to get him some gear oil for it and the x-fer case, along with some u-joints.

I have a 2bbl or the 4 barrel with intake. I have an Edelbrock intake and Edelbrock carb too. You don't need to take the head off to change the freeze plug. That's dumb as hell. There are freeze plugs in the head though. The ones in the rear are impossible to get to. I would still just remove the engine though to get to them. It will cost him $$ for all the gaskets and stuff if he removes the head.

I told him how to do it without removing the head...
Edelbrock a 4bbl?
I need to get that prop valve back to you also...

UPDATE:
Corey actually got this thing started. He replaced several frost plugs, had to pull the transmission for a few.
Replaced the transmission and the transfer case, refilled both. He said the fluid that came out of both were just nasty as can be.
After recharging the battery again (we will be buying a new battery eventually) and turning the dizzy 180 degrees... it starts and runs as long as someone pours gas down the carb.
He replaced the fuel pump yesterday, and it runs... lousy, but it runs. He'll be working on that today.

No wonder it runs like crap! Try putting a rotor and distributor cap on it and I'll betcha it works a LOT better! :D

I'll be picking up a new dizzy (and cap and rotor) later... There is a cracked piece under the missing weights...
It had a cap and rotor. Just removed for photo op.

My son took the front of the motor apart because the dizzy gear on the cam had to be replaced (after I told him not to)... that gear was eaten up.
But putting it back together has been a chore. The harmonic balancer does not want to go back on. I even rented the correct tool from Autozone to install the thing and somehow managed to break the tool...
This "ready to run" jeep has been anything but... I am about ready to start parting the sumbitch out...

Has the crank got a woodruff key in it and is the keyway in the balancer lined up with it? Just asking a basic question.

Yes the key is lined up... Just been a bear to get on...
I am ready to swap a 302 into this sucker. I have never had an issue like this with a 302...
It's in, going back together slowly...
It does not help that my son took it apart and instead of keeping the bolts and spacers all nice and neat, he just dropped them on hte ground or where ever at the school... Yes on the ground. He wasn't even working on it inside the classroom/shop...

Seriously?
That same thought has crossed my mind more than one time... More than one time... :sigh:

OK, so I got some pics and some information that helped me put the front end back together on this thing...
Was finishing up the front end when my son got home and decided he needed to help...
By dropping a bolt down the dizzy hole
